I find the best way for you to learn is not to make signatures but have fun in GIMP. Find out what all those pretty buttons do and how to blend different objects together, be it shapes or rocket-bike-ninjas. Once you have a good understanding of what the tools and filters do, read some tutorials and apply what you learned while having fun to the signatures you'll be making with the tutorials a guidelines, and nothing more than guidelines.
